Built in 1956, this iconic home has become one of renowned architect Neil Clerehan’s (1922-2017) greatest remaining legacies. Working together with Robin Boyd, Clerehan defined mid-century architecture in Melbourne. In 1954, Clerehan designed a demonstration home to showcase the latest in modern residential design, construction and furnishing. The design went on to win The Age’s 1955 Small Homes Service Program’s Dream Home.

The house has been featured in countless media titles, including Modernist Australia, Sydney Morning Herald, and Architect Victoria. The lounge room was immortalised by American artist Josh Agle (aka Shag) in his work, ‘Welcome to Your New Lifestyle’.

The property came to the attention of Nicole and her husband Zac when it was offered for sale as land in 2016. With no heritage protection in place, it seemed likely that it would be demolished and its rich history along with it.

The couple swiftly acquired the property for their own and began the task of creating a modern family home which still respected the heritage of the genre. In choosing an architect, which included contacting Neil Clerehan, who sadly passed away not long after, but was aware the home was to be saved.

They then engaged Sydney-based celebrated architect Julian Brenchley to re-imagine the home while keeping all the iconic elements like the glass walls and panelled walls. Julian is well known for his design commissions to transform derelict homes and warehouses into unique, prestige properties on the hit TV show ‘The Block’.

In 2019, this dream home will be undergoing the transition from the original 2 bedroom house into a functional family home with four bedrooms and a study, three living areas, a glass encased central zen garden and a large chef’s kitchen, all on one level.
