The Japanese Influence

On Monday we shared with you the progress featuring our round window offset in the south wall overlooking the internal zen garden. As the round window is not necessarily a mid-century modern design feature from the original design, we thought it was a great time to answer some of the questions this brings up.

When renovating a period home there is a risk that mixing design styles could result in a big mess. The key to avoiding this is to use an architect along with your own research. The big challenge is to decide where the boundaries are with restoration of a museum piece that is not practical in today’s lifestyle. There are innovations that can enhance the iconic style with contemporary luxury.

We love how well Japanese design and Mid Century Modern go together. Both concepts center around minimalism and the theory that a lot less is more. Keeping things simple and clean was all part of our brief and vision. This north-facing wall was originally meant to be all glass, but as we required additional storage along that hallway, the plans were changed to add the solid wall and this round window as a point of interest.
